Herpetology for
Beginners
Currumbin
Wildlife Sanctuary is pleased to offer Introduction to Herpetology
Community Course to people 12 years and older*. This Community Course
is designed for those with a keen interest in seeking knowledge and
understanding of Reptile identification, legislation and relevant
government bodies, basic taxonomy, captive-husbandry needs and
maintenance, health, nutrition and reproduction of reptiles.
* 12 – 17 year olds must have Parent / Guardian permission.
LEARNING OUTCOME 1Students
will be able to follow state guidelines, comply with government
regulations and be familiar with necessary application forms
appropriate to captive reptile keeping.
LEARNING OUTCOME 2Students will have the knowledge to create an optimum captive environment for specific reptile species.
LEARNING OUTCOME 3Students
will have the knowledge to maintain a captive environment through
appropriate husbandry i.e. diet, enclosure hygiene and record keeping.
LEARNING OUTCOME 4Students will have a sound knowledge of breeding, incubating and raising young reptiles.
LEARNING OUTCOME 5Students
will have a basic knowledge of reptile identification, and have an
understanding of routine capture, handling and restraint techniques for
non-venomous captive reptiles.
LEARNING OUTCOME 6Students will have a basic knowledge of zoonotic diseases, reptile diseases and relevant health issues.
LEARNING OUTCOME 7Students will be able to contact relevant reptile clubs, know how to purchase a reptile and the appropriate products.
Herpetology Courses are run
throughout the year and are conducted by qualified Currumbin Wildlife
Sanctuary wildlife officers who specialise in reptile keeping. Course
duration is a total of 15 hours run over two consecutive Saturdays 9am
- 4.30pm.
