Careers Day

This exciting event, sponsored by the RSPCA Gold Coast and Hinterland Branch, gives individuals and school students an insight into working with animals. Experts will outline the opportunities, explain potential career paths, advise on subject choice and educational courses.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary staff and volunteers will be available to discuss a variety of careers in animal welfare. Individuals and students will have the opportunity to enrol in Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary courses, work experience and volunteer programs. There will also be workshops and lectures by experts from various organisations including Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the RSPCA, Guide Dogs Queensland and the Animal Welfare League.

The 2011 Wildlife and Animals Careers Expo will be held on Wednesday, 31st August.

COST: $8 per person

Veterinary Hospital and Research Tour

30 mins - $10pp - 15 people per time slot

Meet at Frog Box (map ref 37), guests required to meet 5 minutes prior

 

• FROG BOX – talk about the program we’re involved in and how it is helping to save the species (5mins)

• RAPTOR REHAB & FLIGHT AVAIRY – talk about Currumbin’s state of the art facility and about the animals in rehab. As we walk past the pres department talk about how some of our animals have been keep, as un-releasable (10mins)

• STOCK HOSPITAL- meet with veterinary staff to catch a glimpse of the day to day running of the hospital, including typical treatment cases (10mins)


Wildlife Keeper Guided Tour

45 mins - $8pp

Meet at Tour Meeting Point at Trade Show (map ref 5), guests required to meet 5 minutes prior

 

• KANGAROO PADDOCK- Explain macropod species and embryonic diapause. Talk about the importance of monitoring population numbers in captivity (15mins)

• CROC WETLANDS- Difference between Saltwater and Freshwater Crocodile. Explain the difference between Reptile husbandry and Mammal/Avian husbandry (10mins)

• TASMANIAN DEVIL ENCLOUSRE (ALLUNGA) - Talk about husbandry principles involved in breeding and the importance of this Tasmanian devil population (10mins)

 

Koala West Side Feed Out Activity 

30 mins - $10 pp - max 8 people

Meet at the Tour Meeting Point at Trade Show (map ref 5), guests required to meet 5 minutes prior

 

Meet with one of our Mammal Keepers to feed and clean out the West Side Koala Enclosure – learn about these unique mammals and the animal husbandry which contributes to their care in captivity.

 

Animal Photo Encounter 

30 mins - $18pp -  max 10 people per group

Meet at the Wild Art Counter (near map ref 11)  , guests required to meet 5 minutes prior to activity.


Find out more about some of Australia’s iconic animals.  You will have the opportunity to hold and meet the keepers of one of the following animals:- yellow tailed black cockatoo, dingo, big pythons, eagle and barking owl.  Price includes a souvenir 8 x 10 inch colour photo of yourself and the animal you have met during the encounter.  (Sorry, we cannot guarantee which animal will be rostered on at which time).
