PARROT BRINGS PUNK ATTITUDE TO PARK
Meet Big Bird, the five-year-old Macaw and a regular star of the Free Flight Bird Show.

Big Bird has been at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary since he was a chick and is now hitting the parrot equivalent of adolescence – and like most adolescents, he also developed a bit of attitude.

But Presentations Supervisor Adam Bean says this is all part of what makes Big Bird such a special bird.

“It takes a long time for large birds to mature, so he’s still quite young. They can live as long as humans – up to 80 or 90 years,” Adam said.

“You could probably equate him to a teenager who’s a bit of a punk – he’s constantly testing the boundaries.”

While Macaws are not native to Australia, Big Bird plays an important role in the Free Flight Bird Show in illustrating the amazing parrot species around the world which are under threat due to habitat loss.

But growing up in Australia has meant that Big Bird has developed a taste for macadamias.

The macaw’s large, strong beak can easily pop a macadamia shell, but, according to Adam, the nuts are the equivalent of junk food for macaws.

“He doesn’t get them every day – they’re a kind of treat.”

EXTREME GREEN CHALLENGE
Challenge, or ropes, courses are becoming increasingly popular as a way of building group trust, relationships and empowering individuals to face their fears.

The Extreme Green Challenge Currumbin's own high ropes adventure course developed in partnership with Adventure Parc. At present there are 13 individual activities, up to 11m above the ground, with a 130m flying fox to take you back to earth. The feeling of finishing such a course is quite remarkable especially as you make that decision to step off the flying fox platform and enjoy 20 seconds of adrenalin before your feet touch the ground.

However there are many things you gain from completing a ropes course like this, in addition to having fun. Increasing balance, using both upper and lower body muscles (some that you may not have used in a while), bonding with family and friends who join you, enjoying the fantastic sunny Gold Coast weather and doing it all for $10!

So next time you come to the Sanctuary, stop by and see us at the Extreme Green Challenge counter (near the kangaroo paddock) and ask how we can challenge you!
